Michael Oliver involved in more controversy with Harry Kane penalty call

It feels like we cannot go more than a week without Michael Oliver being involved in some sort of controversy. And this time it's not in the Premier League.

The Englishman has angered both Arsenal and Liverpool players, managers and supporters this season with a number of major decisions. He sent off Myles Lewis-Skelly for a foul in his own half against Wolves - a decision which was eventually overturned on appeal.

Oliver also showed a red card to Leandro Trossard for kicking the ball away against Manchester City, while he was the man in the middle for the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park, which ended with two players and Liverpool's manager and assistant being sent off after the final whistle.

Oliver, who has been left out of Premier League action this coming weekend after failing to send off Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts for a horror challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta in the first instance, was in Champions League action in midweek and his match did not go without incident.

The English referee was the man in the middle for the all-Germany clash between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen in the last-16 first leg at the Allianz Arena.

Oliver had already sent off Leverkusen's Nordi Mukiele for a second bookable offence when he raked down the back of Kingsley Coman's leg - which was the correct call - before he needed VAR to come to his rescue midway through the second half.

From a corner, Leverkusen substitute Edmond Tapsoba had his arms all around former Tottenham striker Harry Kane in the box, keeping hold of him as the ball was delivered in and forcing Kane to the ground. Oliver appeared to be looking directly at it and gestured to Kane to get up.

However, VAR took a look at it and suggested Oliver go to the screen to watch a replay. And after reviewing the incident, Oliver changed his mind and pointed to the penalty spot.

Kane had complained to the referee prior to the second decision, with Oliver telling him to get out of his face, and the England captain stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick for his second of the game to make it 3-0 to Bayern, giving them a commanding lead to take into the second leg next week.
