PSG boss Luis Enrique laments‘unfair’loss to Liverpool in the Champions League

Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique has shared his view on the 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool in the first-leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie.

The Spanish boss called the result “unfair” as the hosts completely dominated the game but still ended up losing.

The Parisians boasted over 70% possession and registered 27 shots, but they failed to breach Liverpool’s defences.

This was mainly due to the brilliance of Alisson Becker between the sticks, with the Brazilian making an incredible nine saves.

Manager Arne Slot rolled the dice late in the match, replacing Mohamed Salah with Harvey Elliott.

The Dutchman’s move proved to be a masterstroke as Elliott netted the winner with his first touch of the ball.

The result means Liverpool are now favourites to reach the Champions League quarterfinals.

Anfield, one of the best stadium tours in the UK per Football Blog, will be venue for the return leg and the Reds have always been excellent at home.

In his post-match press conference, Enrique admitted that the result wasn’t fair but he promised his team will take the positives into the away leg.

He said: “It’s very unfair. It was a very complete game from us, maybe our most complete game in the Champions League. In the first half, the expected goals were totally in our favour. They shot once and scored. Their best player was Alisson the goalkeeper. It’s a bit strange but I feel very proud of my team, the players and the fans. There was a wonderful atmosphere but football is sometimes unfair. You have to score. We’ll take it in a positive way and think about the return match in Liverpool.”

Liverpool’s performance in Paris was far from convincing as their attackers Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz all struggled to make an impact.

The Egyptian forward was particularly poor as he lost possession an incredible 16 times. He lost 100% of his ground/aerial duels and didn’t complete even one of his four dribbling attempts.

Salah also failed with his two crossing and one long ball attempt.

Despite his struggles on Wednesday, the 32-year-old has had an excellent 2024-25 season.

In 40 appearances across all competitions, he has scored 30 goals and registered 22 assists.

Salah is one of the main reasons Liverpool are 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
