Luis Enrique believes Paris Saint-Germain have nothing to lose at Anfield next week after insisting it was “not fair” his team were beaten by Liverpool. Substitute Harvey Elliott scored the only goal three minutes from time as the Reds survived an onslaught from PSG to earn a 1-0 Champions League round of 16 first leg win at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool have never been eliminated from Europe in the knockout stage having won the first leg on their travels.

But Enrique has warned his team will be dangerous when they look to create history in the Anfield return next Tuesday.

“We have nothing to lose if we manage to repeat the same way we played today,” said the PSG boss. “It will be very aggressive in terms of the atmosphere in their stadium. However, we are just a team that has got nothing to lose. We will go to Liverpool and play exactly as we did today.

“We have managed to turn this situation around in the past, so we will do our best to make sure our supporters are happy. We will try to please them. That’s what I told the players.

“Last year we lost at home in the quarter-finals (to Barcelona and still got through). We know it will be difficult to play away against such an opponent as Liverpool. But we have nothing to lose and that makes us dangerous.”

Of the game, Enrique added: “There’s not a lot of difficulty analysing this game. We were better in the game in the number of opportunities, we have managed to play against one of the best teams in Europe, we have defended very well and took some risks but clearly we deserve a different result.

“But this is football. It’s a sport that can be unfair sometimes. You have to accept that. That’s how it works. We probably we deserved a lot more. Their best player was the goalkeeper Alisson, he was exceptional. That shows how the match went.

“Today it wasn’t about details, Alisson had an amazing game. They only play like that against us because we didn’t let them play.

“In the first five minutes they played better than us, but only for that. Then it was all about PSG. Nobody saw anything else tonight. Of course, the result could have been different but Alisson had an amazing game.

“One team was above the other, we all saw that. Is the result fair? No, the result is not fair.”
