SINGAPORE - A study will be conducted on a site in Tanah Merah Coast Road that has been identified as a potential location for the development of a new funeral services and columbarium complex (FSCC).
In a statement on March 6, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said the site was identified after consulting multiple agencies on factors such as readiness for development and impact on traffic.
“NEA is working with these agencies to further assess the suitability of the newly identified site, and conduct a technical feasibility study,” said the agency.
The Tanah Merah site is one of two locations being considered for the development of a new FSCC, with the other in Mandai Avenue.
In the March 6 statement, NEA said: “Environmental studies on the suitability of the site at Mandai Avenue to be developed as a FSCC are ongoing.”
In December 2023, NEA said it had identified a potential site at the junction of Mandai Avenue and Sembawang Road to develop a new FSCC. It added that an environmental impact assessment and feasibility study will be conducted before plans are finalised.
At the time, NEA noted that the demand for wake spaces, columbarium niches and management of remains is expected to increase in tandem with the number of resident deaths, which is projected to rise to about 40,000 by 2040.
“The Government is planning ahead for such essential facilities while balancing competing land use needs,” the agency said.
There are currentely three government-operated columbariums: Choa Chu Kang Columbarium, Mandai Columbarium and Yishun Columbarium.
The location of the new FSCC will be decided after considering the outcomes of the studies on the Mandai and Tanah Merah sites, said NEA on March 6.
