Manchester United icon and former Paris Saint-German star David Beckham looked gobsmacked and somewhat furious after Liverpool scored late on to seal a stunning 1-0 win over the Parisians.

The Reds were well and truly under the cosh for the majority of their round of 16 first leg clash at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night. PSG’s free-flowing attackers forced Arne Slot's side to adopt a far more defensive approach than we have seen until now this season, with the French champions pushing hard to secure an advantage to take to Anfield.

In the first half, former Liverpool target Khvicha Kvaratskhelia thought he'd put the home side ahead with a stunning curling effort. Yet it was ruled out by the narrowest of margins thanks to the semi-automated offside technology.

Reds defender Ibrahima Konate narrowly escaped a red card minutes later after a clumsy shove on the edge of the penalty box on Bradley Barcola, which VAR decided wasn't a 'clear and obvious error'.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker produced a performance for the ages as PSG kept up the pressure until the final whistle, making nine saves.

But it was substitute Harvey Elliott who crushed the hearts of the home crowd, scoring just 47 seconds after coming on with his first touch to win the first leg for Liverpool.

As the Liverpool players and fans rejoiced, the TV cameras panned to a clearly disappointed Beckham in the stands, who was unable to hide his shock at what he'd just seen unfold. Liverpool ultimately managed to hold on to their lead, giving them an important advantage going into next Tuesday's second leg.

PSG holds a special place in the England legend’s heart, having been the last club he ever played for before hanging up his boots in 2013.

He joined them in January that year on a five-month deal, receiving a standing ovation in his final game after providing an assist, while lifting the Ligue 1 trophy that season.

Meanwhile, statistics only go to show just how marvellous a feat Liverpool’s win over PSG was. Slot’s side had just two shots in comparison to the Parisians’ 27 on the night, with the only one on target being Elliott’s winner.

Liverpool's attention now shifts to the weekend, as they prepare to host bottom of the Premier League Southampton at Anfield.
