Chelsea, Leeds United among clubs eyeing Sunderland defender

Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin has been scouted by a host of clubs this season including Leeds United, Chelsea and Spurs, as per TBR Football.

Sunderland have become one of the strongest developers of young talent outside the Premier League. SAFC have long had a productive youth academy, but their focus on recruiting prospects in recent years has yielded great results.

Of course, not all have had fruit to bear. However, it has been key in progressing the Black Cats to the point of the Championship promotion fight, and they have some players who will make them big profits in the years to come.

Among them is Dennis Cirkin, who signed from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021. The left-back has been linked with clubs at a higher level before.

Now, a fresh report from TBR Football highlights the interest the Sunderland man has continued to draw this season.

They state that former club Spurs are interested in re-signing the 22-year-old having kept a close eye on his progress ever since selling.

They’re not the only ones keeping tabs on Cirkin though. It is added that all of Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton and West Ham have scouted the SAFC ace this season, as have Championship promotion rivals Leeds United.

The likes of Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham have taken the headlines at Sunderland this season, but the likes if Cirkin have quietly gone about their business and continued their impressive development.

The Dublin-born full-back has three goals and two assists to his name in 31 Championship outings. He’s been a dangerous presence bombing up and down the left, a trait which is sure to have caught the eye of top clubs.

It would be a step up for Cirkin to go and play Premier League football for the first time, but given what he’s shown in the Championship at 22, it’s a step many will back him to make to great success.

Sales ahead?

Regardless of how this season ends, it could be that Sunderland are facing sales this summer.

Clubs are bound to test their resolve over Rigg and Bellingham regardless, but it would be a lot easier to keep others stars such as Cirkin and Dan Neil with promotion. Failure to rise to the Premier League may well see clubs start to sniff around the Black Cats though.

SAFC are in a strong financial position and will do what they can to fend off interest in big assets, but they could face a challenging summer nonetheless with bids inevitable.
