Premier League Player of the Season: Five contenders

With just ten matches remaining, Premier League leaders Liverpool boast a healthy 13-point lead over second-placed Arsenal in the top flight table.

While the Reds have played a game more than the majority of their nearest rivals, Arne Slot’s side look almost certain to go on to win the title this term.

Here, we take a look at five players that could be in the frame to win the Premier League Player of the year Award.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Salah has been something of a talisman for Liverpool ever since joining the club in 2017, but this season has been arguably his best in the red shirt. In 28 league games, the forward has scored 25 goals and provided 17 assists. That form has helped propel Slot’s side into a huge advantage at the top of the standings and Salah looks to be the most likely winner of the individual prize at the end of the season.

Alexander Isak – Newcastle United

Isak is another player that has been in fine form in front of goal this season, netting 19 times in 24 league games and also providing five assists. The Swede scored eight consecutive matches across December and January, including a hat-trick against Ipswich Town. Despite Isak’s scintillating individual season, he may miss out on the biggest individual accolade at the end of the campaign.

Virgil van Dijk – Liverpool

Liverpool captain Van Dijk has been in sensational form for Slot’s side this term. While the Reds’ captain may not get the level of appreciation that teammate Salah receives, the Dutchman remains rock solid at the back and has played an integral role in helping the Reds’ build up such a huge advantage. The centre-back has played every single minute of Liverpool’s Premier League campaign so far.

Cole Palmer – Chelsea

Chelsea star Palmer won the PFA Young Player of the Year Award last season, and was arguably unfortunate not to win the main prize. This season the England international has continued his fine form, registering a combined 20 goals and assists in 27 Premier League matches. Palmer is, however, on something of a poor run by his own high standards, having failed to score or assist in any of his last six league games.

Gabriel – Arsenal

Centre-back Gabriel has established himself as one of Arsenal’s most important players over the past few seasons, and the Brazilian has once again been in fine form this term. The defender has missed just two league games so far, and netted important goals in successive matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in September to earn Mikel Arteta’s side four important points.
