André Onana insists he couldn’t reject Manchester United despite being aware of the challenges at Old Trafford.
The Cameroon international has been speaking to Media Carré on various topics including his move to Manchester United. L’Attaquant have relayed his comments.
He was at Inter Milan during the 2022/23 season where he won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana, and lost the Champions League final to Manchester City.
The goalkeeper left the Serie A side for Manchester United in July 2023 to become David de Gea’s successor. He kept 13 clean sheets and conceded 83 goals from 51 games in his debut season.
This season, the former Ajax man has eight clean sheets, and 50 goals conceded from 36 matches. He has been subjected to constant criticism for his mixed performances for the Red Devils.
Onana has revealed he was warned about joining Manchester United and explains why he accepted the transfer.
“I was already aware of the difficulties. Some players wrote to me to ask me to prepare because it rains all the time, and I risked being depressed,” he said.
“But you can’t say no to Manchester United. It’s an institution. Once the offer came, I said: Let’s go!”
In November, the Premier League club replaced Erik ten Hag with Ruben Amorim and the results haven’t improved at all. They are currently 14th in the table with 33 points from 27 matches.
The stopper claims Manchester United’s goal is to get the club back on top.
“In times of difficulty, you always have to try to find the positive side. It’s not going well today, but it will be better tomorrow. Our main objective is to put Manchester back in its place, the biggest club in the country. Our opponents are well prepared, like City or Liverpool. The Premier League is an extremely tough championship,” Onana explained.
