Fresh Nottingham Forest director change confirmed as official document filed

Nottingham Forest have made another change to their board of directors.

A document filed on the Companies House website confirms Ioannis Vrentzos is no longer a director at the club. The official document is listed as “termination of a director appointment”.

An identical filing was made last month, confirming Reds co-owner Sokratis Kominakis is no longer a director. Kominakis was part of the consortium, headed by Evangelos Marinakis, to take over the club in May 2017.

In both cases, the most likely reason behind the changes to the board is that Forest are preparing to comply with UEFA competition regulations. The rules prohibit clubs controlled by the same owners or directors from competing in the same European competition.

It comes as there is the possibility both the Reds and fellow Marinakis-owned outfit Olympiacos could be competing in European football next season. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are currently third in the Premier League table and are in with a very good chance of clinching a Champions League place.

The club are likely putting steps in place to ensure there would be no issues should both they and Greek sister side Olympiacos find themselves in the same European competition in 2025/26. UEFA regulations regarding “integrity of the competition/multi-club ownership” state: “No individual or legal entity may have control or influence over more than one club participating in a UEFA club competition.”

Forest have had a few behind-the-scenes changes in recent months. Nicholas Randall KC was reappointed as chairman in October after his replacement, Tom Cartledge, stepped down from the role. Meanwhile, Lina Souloukou officially took on the role of chief executive last month. Souloukou has worked with Marinakis before, at Olympiacos.

With Vrentzos and Kominakis no longer directors, according to the list on the club’s official website, the City Ground board is made up of Randall and non-executive directors Jonny Owen, Simon Forster and Michael Dugher. Vrentzos was appointed as chief executive when Marinakis bought the Reds in May 2017. In the summer of 2021, he was replaced in that role by Dane Murphy - who then left the club in January 2023 - but retained a place on the board.

Forest host Manchester City on Saturday (12.30pm). Ahead of the game, they are one place and one point above Pep Guardiola’s side in the table.
