Manchester United fans have been warned not to use dangerous pyrotechnics ahead of a planned protest at the weekend.
Trafford Council has issued a statement to fan groups following their latest plan to take to the streets to protest the club's ownership before their home fixture against Arsenal on Sunday.
They said the use of pyrotechnics such as flares could result in stadium bans and criminal records, adding they 'support' fan's rights to protest but that the use of such flares could 'harm fellow supporters or the public'.
Manchester United fans protesting before games at Old Trafford have been reminded not to use dangerous pyrotechnics, which could result in stadium bans and criminal records.
Trafford Council said protests in previous seasons have seen "significant use of pyrotechnics such as flares, which have caused injury to members of the public, people working at the stadium and police officers".
Manchester United will play Arsenal at home on Sunday
The protests are planned for Sunday (March 9) at 3pm ahead of the 4.30pm kick-off. A spokesperson for Trafford Safety Advisory Group said: “The use of pyrotechnics in public spaces and within the footprint of the stadium is a criminal offence and in breach of safety regulations, meaning those responsible may receive a penalty including a stadium ban.
“Fans have the right to protest, and we support that right. However, we would ask that protesters are considerate in their behaviour and don’t do anything that is illegal or could harm fellow supporters or members of the public. Don't let a moment of poor judgement lead to criminal prosecution or a match ban.”
