Rangers could potentially find themselves in the territory of Manchester United after appointing Barry Ferguson as interim manager.

Ferguson replaced Philippe Clement at Ibrox as the Belgian manager struggled to bring the best out of the Light Blues this season.

The Gers have had a difficult season, having been knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Queen’s Park and sitting 16 points behind Celtic in the league.

Ferguson has already seen the difficulty of the task at hand as the Bears lost 2-1 to Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership at home on Saturday (1 March).

Simon Jordan believes the Glaswegian outfit could feel compelled to hire Ferguson as the permanent manager at the end of the season.

The talkSPORT pundit doesn’t think the ex-Gers midfielder has the credentials to be in the Light Blues’ dugout, and he was brought in to placate fans.

Jordan feels the Bears could be forced to do what Man United have done in the past with managers like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and give the interim boss the job next summer at Ibrox.

Speaking on talkSPORT (6 March, 10:45), the Englishman said: “Ferguson to me has no credentials to be the Rangers manager besides the optics of trying to placate a disconnected fanbase from a dysfunctional team.

“And they may find themselves in the territory of Man United, which is all of a sudden Ferguson does a few things that are relatively meaningful and they find themselves compelled to give him a job.”

Ferguson will not last at Ibrox

Ferguson’s move to Ibrox was temporary, and the Gers icon probably knows he won’t last in the dugout beyond this season.

The Light Blues were seemingly in desperate need to change Clement after supporters expressed their discontent.

While it was surprising to see the former Scotland international being hired, it arguably makes sense to have him alongside Billy Dodds, Allan McGregor and Neil McCann to bring some authority in the dressing room.

The new coaching staff have possibly realised they’re in over their heads, as the Bears’ defensive frailties have been on show in the last two matches.

Even if Ferguson wins the Europa League, a more experienced head coach should be at Ibrox next summer.

Man United have made some errors in the past by handing Solskjaer the role after he did well as the interim boss and also stuck by Erik ten Hag after the FA Cup win last season despite evident frailties under the Dutch manager.

Who will be in charge of the Glaswegian outfit in the coming months remains to be seen.
