'It will be': Paul Merson makes early prediction about Liverpool's second-leg against PSG at Anfield next week

Liverpool’s incredible 2024/25 campaign continued on Wednesday night in Paris.

The Reds have performed poorly on several occasions this season and walked away with a win, however, the Merseyside club’s victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League was another level.

Liverpool needed Alisson Becker to save them throughout the contest in France before Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott linked up very late in the match as the English talent scored the only goal of the contest.

The heroics of the Liverpool goalkeeper have been praised by many in the aftermath of the thrilling Champions League contest with the likes of Peter Schmeichel labelling Alisson’s performance as “one of the best goalkeeping displays I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Arne Slot knows his team got away with one against PSG and after the contest, Paul Merson has shared if he thinks the Merseyside club’s name is on the trophy.

Paul Merson on whether Liverpool’s name is on the Champions League

PSG star Vitinha believes his team can beat Liverpool at Anfield and if the Ligue 1 leaders can put in a display like they did in Paris, Luis Enrique’s men have a great chance to go through ot the next round.

This is a view Merson shares as the Sky Sports pundit believes the French giants can score if they bring the same levels to Merseyside next week as the former Arsenal star struggled to get his head around Wednesday night’s result.

“I don’t think the tie is over. If PSG can get to anywhere near them levels at Anfield, they will score,” Merson said on Sky Sports.

“But, you know, European nights at Anfield. I just can’t get my head around that result. They were unbelievable PSG and Liverpool have gone on and won, but can’t wait for the next leg. It will be an outstanding, intriguing game.”

When asked if the result indicates whether Liverpool’s name is on the Champions League trophy, Merson responded with: “Too early to say. If they play like that in other games. They could have been blown away, Alisson was ten out of ten.”

Merson predicted Liverpool to struggle against PSG in Paris and that is what played out, however, having failed to get the win, how will that affect the Ligue 1 leaders next week at Anfield.

The knock-on effect of Liverpool’s win over PSG

PSG have shown in 2025 that they are one of the best teams in Europe and that was on display at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night as they battered the Premier League leaders.

Yet, Liverpool still came away with the result and that is bound to have a psychological effect on Enrique’s men heading to Anfield next week, a stadium where the Reds very rarely lose.

The French giants threw everything at Liverpool and it still was not enough, and they will know that the Merseyside club will show up better prepared on Tuesday.

The only bonus is that Slot’s men will not defend as much in front of their home crowd, which could leave space for PSG’s speedy front three to run into.

It will be intriguing to see how all these factors play out in the second leg as Anfield gets ready to host another memorable European contest.
