Many Liverpool fans are no doubt still in shock that the Reds were able to come away with the win in Paris last night.

The raw statistics from the encounter paint a picture so improbable that future football historians might be forgiven for suspecting a clerical error in the record books.

In what will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most audacious and unlikely heists in recent European football memory.

But while the likes of Alisson and co. were celebrated for a historic European performance, it has not been quite as positive back home.

That’s because Middlesbrough have been dealt a devastating blow to their playoff aspirations with the news that Liverpool loanee Ben Doak required surgery after aggravating his thigh injury in training this week.

This is according to Craig Johns of Teesside Live, who reported that the winger has returned to the AXA for treatment after undergoing a ‘minor surgery’.

The talented 19-year-old winger, who had been nearing a return to action following a month on the sidelines, and is in all likelihood out for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign – representing a significant setback for Michael Carrick’s side as well as Doak himself.

The Scot sustained the initial thigh injury in late January, forcing him to miss Middlesbrough’s last six Championship fixtures.

The club’s medical staff had been carefully managing his rehabilitation, with Carrick previously expressing optimism about a mid-March return.

The injury news comes as a particular disappointment given Doak’s impressive performances during his loan spell at the Riverside Stadium. The Liverpool youngster had established himself as one of Carrick’s pillars in the side, recording three goals and seven assists in 24 appearances before his initial injury setback.
