Report: Paul Mitchell transfer strategy disregarded as Newcastle eye £38m CL winner

Newcastle United have a big shopping list ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies are in serious need of bodies following three transfer windows without recruiting a player for the starting XI – a move which Eddie Howe is now feeling the effects of.

Newcastle United sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in the summer to avoid a points deduction for the 2024/25 season. PSR was the sole reason why the sales were made, Howe was reluctant to let the pair go and Anderson admitted he didn’t want to leave Newcastle but it has not stopped him from thriving at Nottingham Forest.

Minteh scored against Newcastle in the Magpies’ defeat to Brighton on Sunday, the young winger refused to celebrate despite never playing a minute for his former club.

In January, Newcastle’s squad depth took an even bigger hit after sporting director Paul Mitchell sanctioned Lloyd Kelly and Miguel Almiron’s exits. The pair were useful squad players but sought more first-team football elsewhere. Kelly’s exit has been a particular blow after it was revealed that Sven Botman and Lewis Hall will miss the Carabao Cup final later this month.

With Newcastle keen to replace what they’ve lost in the summer, a new report has linked them to a Champions League winner who is keen on a move to England.

Newcastle eyeing move for Kingsley Coman

Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman has had quite the career, winning titles at every club he has played at. The 28-year-old won the Ligue 1 twice with PSG, Serie A twice with Juventus and a whopping eight Bundesliga titles with Bayern alongside the Champions League, Club World Cup and several other honours.

This season, Coman’s form has taken a dip in comparison to his numbers in other campaigns. The Frenchman has eight goal involvements in the Bundesliga and has scored just once in nine Champions League appearances.

However, his trophy-laden career still makes him a big name for any club he signs for and according to CaughtOffside, Newcastle are keen to sign Coman in the summer.

Coman was close to joining Arsenal last year but the move failed to materialise. There was also reported interest from the Saudi Pro League.

The report states that Coman is keen to stay in Europe and would prefer to join a club in England or Spain in the summer.

As well as Newcastle, Liverpool, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid are keeping tabs on the winger, but no talks have taken place as it stands.

It is believed that a fee of around £38m would be enough for Bayern to allow him to go elsewhere.

Kingsley Coman goes against Paul Mitchell’s transfer plan

Since Mitchell arrived in July 2024, the focus has been on recruiting young players rather than established stars who could cost considerably more. Newcastle welcomed William Osula to the club and although he hasn’t featured as much as he would’ve liked this season there are clear signs that he has a place in Howe’s starting XI in the future.

Signing Coman would immediately go against what Mitchell wants to do at Newcastle. At 28, his transfer fee is steep and that’s not taking into account the hefty wage bill it would add.

Newcastle are close to signing Antonio Cordero from Malaga on a free transfer, the 18-year-old is a perfect example of the players Mitchell wants to bring to the club going forward. Cordero will be loaned out for his first season, similar to what the club did for Minteh when he joined in 2023.

The idea is that Howe will develop these young players, so they are able to hit the ground running once they are ready to play for the first team.
