Rangers will have a strategic approach under the 49ers Enterprises amid speculation around Jose Mourinho being their manager.

The Gers face Fenerbahce in the Europa League round of 16, with Barry Ferguson in charge of the Glaswegian outfit on an interim basis.

Mourinho was asked about managing at Ibrox in the pre-match press conference ahead of the first-leg on 6 March and left the door open regarding a move.

With the American consortium in talks to take over the Bears, there will arguably be money to spend in the coming months as they potentially look for a permanent head coach.

49ers unlikely to hire Mourinho at Rangers

Keith Jackson feels the 49ers won’t make a move to hire Mourinho at the Gers.

The Daily Record journalist believes the Portuguese head coach would cost around £10million a year at the Light Blues.

Some of the trophies Mourinho has won as manager.

While the possible new owners will make funds available at the Bears, Jackson thinks they will be strategic about it, ruling out the former Real Madrid boss’ appointment at Ibrox.

Speaking on Hotline Live (5 March), the journalist said: “What are we talking about here? I know we’re getting excited about the 49ers and the takeover. Mourinho has probably taken somewhere in the region of £10m a year. That would be the going rate for him.

“Even if the 49ers, with all of their might, come running at this, and we’ve talked about it, and I’ve said consistently that they will spend money, they’re not going to be shy, but they’re not going to be stupid about it either. It’s going to be strategic.

“I don’t think they’re going to open up the bank vault and let Mourinho walk in and help himself.”

Mourinho would be blockbuster at Ibrox

Mourinho would be a blockbuster at Ibrox, considering his demeanour and style of play during his managerial career.

The Portuguese manager has been at clubs like Inter Milan, Madrid and Chelsea, enjoying major success there.

While his time at Manchester United and Tottenham wasn’t the best, the two clubs have many off-field issues that need to be addressed.

Fenerbahce isn’t the biggest club in the world, yet Mourinho has done an impressive job with the Turkish outfit this season, going toe-to-toe with Galatasaray in the Super Lig.

Ferguson knows his time at Ibrox is limited, and it would be surprising to see the ex-Gers midfielder continue beyond this season.

Philippe Clement struggled to bring the best out of the Light Blues on a consistent basis, but they evidently have a good enough team to compete, considering their prospects in Europe this season.

The Bears have some talented individuals in their squad and should hire an elite manager next summer to fulfil the squad’s potential.

Mourinho will undoubtedly bring a winning mentality to the Glaswegian outfit, but it’s difficult to see him manage them in the future.
