Roy Keane's scathing Manchester United verdict still rings true ahead of Europa League return

Manchester United Roy Keane has been critical of the club this season

Manchester United legend Roy Keane isn't afraid of speaking his mind and his scathing review of a Europa League clash earlier this season still rings true.

The United legend was left seething after Christian Eriksen's comments following the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford with FC Twente in the Europa League clash back in September. The Reds midfielder said the Eredivisie side "wanted it more" than United, in an unforgiveable admission according to Keane.

"When players are coming out after the [FC Twente match] and going, 'I think they might've wanted it more than us', I kind of gave up at that stage," Keane said on an episode of Stick to Football.

"If that's the noise coming out of the dressing room, then no wonder the manager's in trouble. No wonder they're not going to win football matches."

Erik ten Hag would be relieved of his duties the following month after a disappointing start to the season, with Ruben Amorim appointed as the new head coach. Tasked with turning United's season around, it's been a baptism of fire for the Portuguese head coach.

The Reds crashed out of the FA Cup against Fulham at the weekend, having also been knocked out of the League Cup earlier this season. Their dire run in the top flight means a return to European football is a long shot, unless they can win the Europa League.

With United back in action this evening, Keane's assessment of the club still rings true.

"But that's where United are - it's hit and miss," the Irishman continued. "They win a few games, but they're going to lose plenty. They're too open.

"They're not athletic. They don't score enough goals. I'm not sure there's a team there. I don't recognise this team. I don't recognise the club. I would be disgusted if I came in after a game and I felt another team wanted it more than us."

Man United face Real Sociedad tonight who are among the favourites to win the competition this season. The second leg being at Old Trafford should - in theory - give United a slight advantage but they need a considerable improvement on their outing.
