Manchester United’s disastrous season has been anything but a shock, according to Matthijs de Ligt.
The Red Devils have endured a miserable campaign, with the Europa League now their only remaining hope for silverware.
They sit 14th in the Premier League table, well off the pace, and have already been eliminated from both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
Their form at Old Trafford has been particularly concerning, with six defeats in their last 10 home games across all competitions.
United have struggled for consistency, and their performances have often left fans frustrated.
Despite hopes that Ruben Amorim’s arrival in November would steady the ship, results have remained largely disappointing.
De Ligt, who arrived at Old Trafford in the summer following a £38.5 million move from Bayern Munich, has given a blunt assessment of the club’s struggles.

The Dutch international insists he is not surprised by United’s predicament, pointing to the unforgiving nature of the Premier League.
“I wouldn’t call it a shock,” De Ligt admitted as per official club website.
“Obviously, you would have expected a little bit better than the way it is at the moment.”
“But, yes, it’s the Premier League where you’re playing.”
“And the Premier League is, you can’t be at 99 per cent every day because then you lose games against the teams that are in the Premier League.”
“So, obviously, this season, in a lot of games, we haven’t been good enough. So we know that.”

While United have struggled domestically, their Europa League form has been more promising.
The Red Devils remain unbeaten in the competition and will be hoping to continue that run when they face Real Sociedad.
De Ligt remains optimistic about their chances in Europe, adding:
“We try to improve as a team, try to improve as an individual, which also is really important, I think.”
“And then, in the end, it has also sometimes a little bit to do with luck also, I think.”
“But we all know that we have to improve and to become better.”
“But I’m now talking about the Premier League.”
“[Real Sociedad] is another chance to show our worth in a European competition.”

United supporters will be hoping De Ligt can establish himself as a key figure in Ruben Amorim’s back three system.
The Dutchman has already made 35 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring twice.
However, some fans and pundits remain unconvinced given his stints at multiple clubs despite his relatively young age.
De Ligt’s performances will ultimately need to do the talking if he is to win over his doubters at Old Trafford.
