Ex-Ohio State $135 Million Superstar Turns Heads With Release

NFL free agency hasn't even officially begun, but Ohio State Buckeyes legend Joey Bosa is one of the biggest prizes on the market after a huge decision by the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday.

Bosa was one of the stars of the Ohio State team that won the National Championship in the 2014 season, racking up 13.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss in that campaign. He finished his Buckeye career with 26 sacks and 51 tackles for loss.

When healthy, Bosa has consistently delivered that kind of production for the Chargers, however, they elected to release the edge rusher, ending their time together after nine seasons.

Bosa, the third overall pick in the 2016 draft, signed a five-year, $135 million extension with the Chargers in 2020, with that deal reworked to essentially become a two-year, $40.3 million contract last offseason.

He would have become a free agent next year, but the Chargers elected to save themselves over $25 million in cap space by moving on this year.

At 29 and with a checkered injury history that has only seen him play a full regular season twice in his career, there is plenty of risk attached to signing Bosa, and that may limit the amount he is able to command as a free agent.

But for a contender that can use him in a rotational capacity to make the most of his incredible upside without putting too much strain on his body, Bosa could prove to be an extremely astute addition.
