Saudi Arabian Official drops statement on Reds captain

Saudi Arabian official drops a statement regarding Reds captain and Dutch international defender Virgil van Dijk.

Reports had suggested that Van Dijk was a major target for teams from the Saudi Pro League. The defender has seen his contract situation with the club linger on for most parts of the season.

Many fans are probably giving up faith in Van Dijk, plus Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold extending their contracts due to prolonged negotiations.

Van Dijk’s current deal at Anfield runs until June 2025. Although the club has brought forth an offer to their captain, there have been hitches in the talks as a result of the terms of the new contract and long-term plans of the club.

Saudi official releases statement on Van Dijk

Regardless of the uncertainty of Van Dijk’s future at LFC, recent reports show that the defender will not be on his way to the Saudi Pro League.

According to Dave Ockop, a Saudi official said, “Van Dijk rejected all offers made to him by the Saudi league in the last period.”

The official added, “We learned from those close to Van Dijk that his first desire is to continue in Europe after the end of his contract with Liverpool, so the idea of him coming has been ruled out now.”

Of the three players in the ongoing contract saga, many reports have suggested that the Reds’ captain is the most likely to sign a new contract and remain at Anfield.

Van Dijk is earning £220,000 per week in his contract. The Dutchman turns 34 in July, and it appears the hierarchy at Liverpool are considering the effects of giving an offer with huge wages to the player.

The defender is having another impeccable series of performances this season, playing in every single game for the Reds in the Premier League, while keeping 8 clean sheets, scoring 1 goal, and boasting an 87% pass accuracy.
