Aston Villa star Emi Martinez is widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world.

The 32-year-old won the prestigious Yashin Trophy in 2023 and 2024, cementing his status as one of the best goalkeepers in the game.

The likes of Alisson, Ederson, and Thibault Courtois are contenders for his throne but right now the Villa man is at the peak of his powers and it will take a mighty effort to displace him.

Alisson states claim for best goalkeeper after PSG exploits

The Brazilian stopper has struggled with injury this season but was the sole reason why Liverpool beat Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash.

The 32-year-old made nine saves without conceding, a feat that no other goalkeeper has matched in the competition this season.

After the contest, Daily Mail journalist Dominic King took to X, writing: “Alisson Becker has proven tonight, once and for all, that all the talk about Emi Martinez being the best goalkeeper in the world has been gobbledygook.

“Said this before and will say it again: Alisson is the best of the modern era, the best to play in the Premier League.”

Aston Villa stopper Martinez is still atop of his throne

While Alisson’s display was impressive, there is no denying that, Martinez is still the best goalkeeper in the world right now.

The Villa star has made 73 saves in the Premier League, which ranks in the 82nd percentile compared to 47 for the Reds ace, which puts him in the 51st percentile. [Fotmob]

PL stats Saves High claims (per 90) Sweeping (per 90) Pass completion

Martinez 73 1.48 0.78 79.7

Alisson 47 0.35 0.96 81.2

Martinez v Alisson in the Premier League this season.

Martinez also comes out on top for high claims, with 1.48 per 90 minutes, which ranks in the 87th percentile, meanwhile, Alisson ranks in the 10th percentile with 0.35.

There is little between them when it comes to sweeping, the Argentine ranks in the 69th percentile with 0.78 per 90 while the Brazil star is in the 82nd percentile with 0.96.

There is also a fine margin when it comes to pass accuracy, Martinez is accurate with 79.7 per cent of his attempts, with Alisson completing 81.2 per cent.

The gap between the two is narrow but right now, given that he plays with a worse defence in a team that sits in tenth place, Martinez edges the debate.

This is comparing a man who guided Lionel Messi to his first World Cup to someone who has battled consistency and calls for Caoimhin Kelleher to replace him in recent months.

That may well change if Liverpool go on to lift the Premier League and Champions League titles, then the Villa man might have to relinquish his throne, but that is easier said than done.
