Trump says Mexico won't have to pay tariff on some goods till April 2

Two days after Donald Trump’s long-threatened tariffs against the country’s major trading partner Mexico went into effect, the President on Thursday said that the US's southern neighbour won't have to pay tariffs on some goods till April 2.

The exemption for Mexico is on any goods that fall under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade. However, Trump made no such announcement with regard to Canada, despite US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the President could scale back some of the [25 per cent tariffs that he imposed Canada and Mexico](https://www.indiatoday.in/world/us-news/story/donald-trump-tariffs-on-canada-mexico-china-how-they-could-raise-prices-for-americans-glbs-2688824-2025-03-04?utm_source=global-search&utm_medium=global-search&utm_campaign=global-search) as early as March 5, since the two nations were "trying to show that they’ll do better".

"After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement. This Agreement is until April 2nd," Trump wrote on his Truth Social handle.
