Two things Enzo Maresca must get right at Club World Cup with prize money enough to land key Chelsea target - opinion

Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali will be desperate for Chelsea to win the Club World Cup this summer.

The pair are yet to see the Blues win a trophy since arriving in west London, though that could change before the Club World Cup kicks off if Enzo Maresca‘s men manage to go all the way in the Conference League.

There is also a lot of cash up for grabs, giving Chelsea another incentive to win the tournament.

Before they arrive in the US, Chelsea could make a couple of signings to give their chances of claiming the trophy a boost. As for once they are there, here are two things that Maresca has to get right if the Blues are to have any hope of bringing the Club World Cup back to Stamford Bridge.

Goalkeeper selection

Maresca has not been able to settle on a first-choice goalkeeper this season. It was Robert Sanchez, but he lost his place in the team after a series of errors.

Filip Jorgensen has come in and has not always covered himself in glory, making a very bad mistake himself in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa last month.

Still, Sanchez has made way too many and the kind Chelsea cannot afford to make in tournament football. Unless the Blues sign a new goalkeeper before heading to America, Jorgensen should start between the sticks. Going forward, Mike Penders could eventually become the No.1 at Stamford Bridge.

Use of Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer has played an awful lot of football since joining Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023.

Maresca could be tempted to use the attacking midfielder sparingly at the Club World Cup, not wanting to burn him out ahead of the 2025/26 season.

But there is a lot up for grabs at this tournament, including some serious prize money. The Chelsea boss needs to put his best team out to give the club every chance of winning the trophy, which means starting Palmer.

Club World Cup glory could bankroll Marc Guehi transfer

Once the Club World Cup finishes, all of Chelsea’s focus will be on the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

Chelsea want to sign Marc Guehi to help that campaign be a successful one, and winning the Club World Cup could make doing so much easier.

According to The Guardian, the Blues could make up to £77.5m in prize money if they win the whole competition. In the past, Palace have valued Guehi at £70m.
