Manchester United send heartfelt condolences to the family of ten-year-old Poppy Atkinson after she was killed by a car on a sports pitch in Kendal.
Cumbria Police were called to Kendal Rugby Union Football after reports of a collision involving two children and black BMW i40, on Shap Road, just before 5pm on 5 March 2025.
Ten-year-old Poppy Atkinson, from Kendal, was pronounced dead at the scene. An unnamed girl, an eight-year-old also from Kendal, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Premier League's Manchester United said: "On behalf of Ella, Kobbie and everyone at Manchester United, we send our heartfelt condolences to Poppy's family and friends for their devastating loss.
"Rest in peace Poppy."
Her parents said she played football for Kendal United in the age group above, also representing the county at the u12s level. They added she was "determined" to be a professional footballer for her beloved Manchester United.
They said: “Poppy idolised Ella Toone, Georgia Stanway, Mainoo and Messi to name a few. “Poppy earned her place through her determination and her technical mastery on the pitch, her skill was envied by most that she played with and against."
