Brennan hails 'emphatic' Bees display

The Bees remain unbeaten in the league since October and now have a nine-point cushion over nearest challengers York City.

“We were sloppy in different periods of the game in the first half. I know we came in 3-0 up (at half-time) but you could see what their game plan was,” manager Dean Brennan told the club website.

“It was to sit in and try to frustrate us. I didn’t think we made enough in the first 15 or 20 minutes of forward runs, enough forward passes. I had a little bit of a go at the players on different occasions, but they got used to how I wanted them to play, and I got the message across.

“I thought then we were quite emphatic in what we did. It wasn’t to our top standard, but it was enough to go and win 5-0.”

Five different goalscorers eased concerns of availability throughout the squad, as two late penalties gave some much-needed confidence to a pair who had spent time on the sidelines due to injury.

“It was great to get Chappy (Harry Chapman) on the pitch. Obviously, he’s been out a long time,” said Brennan.

“You see his ability - he always wants the ball. He’s so brave. He wants the ball in all the tight areas. He nearly scored the most amazing goal here. It was Messi-like.

“He went past three or four players, but it just went wide. Good to have him back and get some minutes into him. Everything worked out nice for us.

"We got some subs on and gave (Nik) Tavares a rest. We took a few players out, like Li (Ndlovu). Li was ill last week, so we’ve done that, without Shelton, without Brown, and different players missing for us.

“It’s a very positive day for us.”

And Brennan singled out the performance of Callum Stead, who scored again on the night to bring his season tally to 11 National League goals.

“He’s a quiet kid in there, but he’s a big character around the place. He’s smiley and jokey, but the kid should be proud of himself. His family should be proud of him,” said the boss.

“That performance from him was special. He’s the one who drove that team forward. He’s becoming a leader within our group, and it’s great for him.”

The Bees host off-form Dagenham & Redbridge this weekend in a London derby and Brennan expects his side to take the game to their opponents from the start.

“Football for a fiver. Kids for a quid - it’s happy days,” said Brennan in reference to Barnet’s reduced ticket pricing scheme for fans.

“We’ve got to get on the front foot. It’s a derby and it ain’t gonna be easy. Dagenham are fighting for their lives. They’ve got a good point tonight; I’ve seen their result at Aldershot (0-0 draw).

"No games are easy. We cannot start like we started tonight. I want us to start better and more on the front foot.”
