How Jeffrey Schlupp cost Celtic teammate Kasper Schmeichel the Golden Glove

The Golden Glove is awarded to goalkeepers in the Premier League who have the most clean sheets at the end of the season.

In the year Leicester won the EPL, Schmeichel had 15 and lost out to Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois by just one goal and it was down to one of his current Celtic teammates.

Schmeichel told Stick to Football, “I’d actually more agree with you in the sense that as a keeper, you can only keep one clean sheet a game.

“It’s not like a Golden Boot, you can score more than one goal the game, but it gives you a platform to win the game, obviously.

“But at the end of the day, it’s not that important to keep a clean sheet. The most important thing is to go and score goals and win the game.

“But listen, the year we won the league [at Leicester City], I lost the Golden Glove because of a penalty. Someone give away a penalty away at Chelsea.

Carragher: “Who gave it away?”

Schmeichel: “Jeff Schlupp. The game before, against Everton, we had the chance and N’golo Kante missed his first tackle this season, you know. and Kevin Mirallas scores, that definitely sticks on my mind.”

Kasper Schmeichel’s Celtic season vs 2015/16 Leicester City season

With Schmeichel almost creating Celtic history for clean sheets this season but being denied by late Shayden Morris goal in the Bhoys’ win against Aberdeen, the big Dane is having a storming season at Parkhead.

So, how do Schmeichel’s stats in his first season at Celtic stack up against his title-winning season at Leicester? Here, 67 Hail Hail takes a look:

Kasper Schmeichel Played Clean sheets Goals conceded

Leciester City season 2015/16 40 15 40

Celtic season 2024/25 44 23 41

Schmeichel’s record already looks better at Celtic and considering he has played ten games in the Champions League against some of Europe’s elite teams, the Hoops hero is already proving to be a valuable asset at Celtic Park.
