Two standout West Ham performers in the running for 2025 HOTY – opinion

West Ham have had a difficult season, currently sitting 15th in the league and out of all domestic competitions.

The Hammers have had some legendary ‘Hammer of the Year’ winners over the years, including the likes of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Trevor Brooking, Paolo Di Canio, Mark Noble and Jarrod Bowen having won the award in the past.

It’s been an incredibly disappointing season for West Ham, but that’s not to say there haven’t been any players that have played well across the campaign.

With only a couple of months left in the season, let’s take a look at who could be in contention to win the 2025 HOTY award.

The frontrunners to become 2025 HOTY

A recent X post from West Ham about Aaron Wan-Bissaka was greeted with many comments suggesting the right-back should be this year’s HOTY, and it’s fair to say he’s up there.

The right-back has been West Ham’s second-best player this season, according to SofaScore, and he has racked up some impressive statistics to support this.

The 27-year-old is in the top three for many of West Ham’s defensive and attacking statistics, including assists, passing accuracy, successful dribbles, big chances created, tackles and interceptions.

The former Manchester United player has proved to be a coup since being signed for the club for £15 million in the summer, and will undoubtedly be in contention to win HOTY in his first season at the club.

Another frontrunner for the award, which will come as no surprise, is the the skipper and winner of the 2024 HOTY, Jarrod Bowen.

Bowen has once again had a terrific season for West Ham, with the forward having both the most goals and assists for club, making him the Hammers’ best performer this season according to SofaScore.

The value of Bowen at West Ham was epitomised when he was out with injury for over a month, where the Hammers were only able to win just one of five games without their captain.

Since taking the captain’s armband this season, Bowen has led by example, and his consistent top performances each year in a claret and blue shirt are quickly cementing his legendary status at West Ham.

Other honourable mentions of players that have had stood out in what has been a tough campaign for the Hammers are Tomas Soucek and Max Kilman, who have been incredibly reliable playing in nearly every Premier League game this season.

Soucek is just behind Bowen as West Ham’s top goal-scorer, with the Czech international netting six times in the league this season, while Kilman has been incredibly consistent, playing in every game for the Hammers this season and being a key part of the defence.

In my opinion, I cannot see past Bowen to win HOTY at the moment, with the England international putting in brilliant performances week in week out. His return from injury has been marked with two goals (should be three!) in four games which emphasises how important he is.
