Liverpool are 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League, have a 1-0 lead to take into the home leg of their Round of 16 Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain, and are preparing for the League Cup final on March 16th.
They are by any measure one of Europe’s best and deepest squads under manager Arne Slot in his first season at the club, and the proof has been there for all to see on the pitch. That doesn’t mean, though, that there aren’t areas the squad could be improved.
For many fans and pundits, perhaps the most obvious position is striker, where Darwin Nuñez has struggled for form under Slot and Diogo Jota remains a deadly finisher but one who struggles to stay fit. And plenty of names have been mooted.
Perhaps the most high-profile linked player, though, has been 25-year-old Newcastle and Sweden star forward Alexander Isak. Today, The Athletic’s David Ornstein confirmed that the Reds hold genuine interest in the Newcastle striker.
There are plenty of caveats, of course. For one, Newcastle would want a triple-figure fee well in excess of £100M for the player. And even then, the Saudi-owned club would prefer to keep the player and to continue to seek to build around him.
Isak, though, has been at Newcastle since 2022. This his third full season at the club, with the promise every year being that Newcastle was looking to build a Champions League and title challenging side around him. At the moment, they’re sixth.
If Newcastle fail to qualify, then, given the striker is on the verge of entering his prime years it could be hard for them to hold on to him. It would be a long-shot, perhaps, but Liverpool are a club with limited needs and a long-shot isn’t an impossibility.
