Trent Alexander-Arnold has fired Paris Saint-Germain a message following Liverpool's smash-and-grab victory in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The 26-year-old defender played a significant role in the 1-0 win over the French giants, helping the Reds keep a crucial clean sheet.

Liverpool will lock horns with PSG in the second leg on Tuesday night, welcoming the Parisians to Anfield – one of the most feared grounds there is on a European night. After waltzing away victorious from the Parc des Princes on Wednesday evening, Alexander-Arnold marked the occasion with a celebratory post on Instagram.

The England international uploaded a picture of himself hugging Harvey Elliott, who netted the winner for Arne Slot's side. Alexander-Arnold's post – which eclipsed 150,000 likes in only a few hours – was captioned: "Advantage. See you at Anfield."

In the comment section, Adebayo Akinfenwa showed his support, while Elliott branded the defender as the 'greatest of all time' with the goat emoji. Echoing Alexander-Arnold's thoughts, Jordan Henderson and Andy Robertson, among others too, liked the post.

Darwin Nunez also had something to get off his chest. The 25-year-old striker, who has struggled to impress this season, marked the PSG clash with a celebratory Instagram post too, writing: "Difficult match, important win, but the job is not done yet. 90 more minutes at home to fight for it. Let’s go @liverpoolfc!."

Speaking to reporters after the game, Slot heaped great praise on Alexander-Arnold. The Liverpool boss said: "I see the same thing during the season many more times. There have been games – I think City away was one of them – where he was outplayed a few times but we didn’t concede that many big chances against City, so sometimes stats are not telling you the truth.

"If he goes past someone in the width of the pitch, it doesn’t tell you that he’s outplayed. The stats that do matter, I just already said a few times, are clear that Paris Saint-Germain are this season incredible in Europe and in their league. Trent, in the first half, one or two times had some difficulties but in general he defended really well, especially also in the second half."

Then, on Elliott and Nunez's role in the winner, Slot added: "I have to give him (Elliott) big compliments for that and also my staff because they keep working with him and every time come up with great exercises so he stays fit.

"But it wasn’t only Harvey, it was also the one who assisted, Darwin Nunez, who came from a difficult two games but was absolutely there again tonight because from the moment he came in we were more of a threat than before."
