Joshua Zirkzee was on the scoresheet for United in Spain
Joshua Zirkzee felt Manchester United deserved more from their Europa League last-16 first leg tie with Real Sociedad than a draw after a penalty had gifted the La Liga side a route back into the game.
Zirkzee had given United the lead just before the hour mark and Ruben Amorim's side looked in total control at that point, but Bruno Fernandes was penalised for handball with 20 minutes to go and Mikel Oyarzabal scored from the spot to leave the tie in the balance ahead of the return at Old Trafford next week.
Sociedad grew in belief after that goal and having barely threatened for three quarters of the game they looked more lively late on, with Zirkzee also critical of United's response to the setback, with their control of the game ebbing away.
“If you see the way the stadium reacts to the penalty and the way they press after the goal they needed it," he said. "I feel like we can do better, remain calm and play the way we were. We lost it a bit after that."
United had produced one of their more impressive performances under Amorim, especially in the midst of an injury crisis that left them with just five outfield players on the bench.
They had their chances to take the lead before Zirkzee scored from 20 yards and enjoyed a good spell after that, with the 23-year-old feeling they could have had more out of the game, despite now being favourites to progress in the second leg and reach the quarter-finals.
“There was more here for us tonight, we were unlucky with the penalty, I'm not sure what happened there," he said.
"It shows we have to be relentless with our chances, we had enough of them. A draw away [is good], they have to come to Old Trafford.
“I think if you look at the chances, the opportunities we had and clear chances I think yes [we deserved more]. We’re playing against a good team, it’s not easy, but we should have had at least one more."
