Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has reportedly turned down the chance to hire former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag has been without a job since being sacked by Manchester United in October 2024. Meanwhile, Klopp recently began his role as Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull.
Klopp’s new job sees him take on a strategic role overseeing Red Bull’s global football network, which includes prominent clubs like RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls.
Unlike his previous coaching roles, the German focuses on mentoring coaches, shaping the clubs’ sporting philosophy, and guiding their long-term development plans. His responsibilities also involve supporting sporting directors, enhancing the club’s global scouting, and contributing to the development of coaches within the organization.
However, Klopp’s influence is growing within the organisation, with the former Liverpool coach also now being consulted in hiring process for a new coaches among the organisation’s clubs.
One of the Red Bull clubs planning for a new hire is RB Leipzig. The German side are currently sixth in the Bundesliga and are likely to part ways with manager Marco Rose at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
One name that has propped up as a potential replacement for Rose is former Manchester United coach Ten Hag.
However, Sky Sports reports that Klopp has ruled out appointing the Dutchman.
The former Liverpool coach has reportedly started to look for Rose’s replacement and came across Ten Hag’s name in the process. But he rejected the ex-United boos.
Per the report, Klopp has a clear profile in mind for Leipzig’s next manager and does not believe Ten Hag fits that profile. He has prepared a shortlist of three German-speaking managers, including Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and former Benfica head coach Roger Schmidt.
