Fresh footage has emerged of a tunnel exchange between Virgil van Dijk and PSG’s sporting director during Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League tie against the French side.
The Reds secured a huge 1-0 win over PSG in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.
Arne Slot’s side were hammered by the French giants, who fired 27 shots at Liverpool, with ten being on target.
However, an 87th-minute goal by substitute Harvey Elliott through his first shot on target sparred Liverpool’s blushes, giving them a huge advantage ahead of the second leg at Anfield next week.
However, the game was without controversy. The referee’s decision not to award PSG a penalty and a subsequent red card for Ibrahima Konate’s first-half tackle on Bradley Barcola in the first half generated debate.
With the French running free on goal, Konate appeared to nudge him from the back. VAR checked the incident and concluded that the Liverpool defender was not in the wrong.
However, many PSG fans felt that Konate should have been sent off.
PSG chief Luis Campos also felt aggrieved by the referee’s decision and had an angry confrontation in the tunnel with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk during half time.
In footage recorded by Canal+, Campos was heard expressing his frustration in the tunnel at halftime at Parc des Princes, angrily insisting, “It’s a red card or penalty.”
However, Van Dijk was not having any of it as he fired back, saying: “Come on bro, it’s not Ligue 1 bro. It’s not Ligue 1.”
This enraged Campos even more as he raised his voice shouting, “It’s a red card or penalty in every part of football.”
Liverpool will be hoping for a more straightforward performance when PSG visit Anfield in the return leg next week.
Should the Reds progress, they are likely to face Aston Villa in the next round, with the Premier League side already 3-1 up in their tie with Club Brugge.
