Man Utd drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad in the Europa League last 16 on Thursday night.
Ruben Amorim says he replaced Alejandro Garnacho during Manchester United's draw with Real Sociedad because the winger 'was tired.' Garnacho was one of three changes to the starting line up as a depleted United squad secured a 1-1 draw in the Europa League last 16 on Thursday night.
United put in one of their better performances under Amorim to take control of the match against La Liga opposition, but failed to make their dominance count as they spurned several chances to score. Joshua Zirkzee finally gave United a deserved lead in the second-half of the match before a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty swung the game on its head and gave Sociedad the momentum.
Garnacho was replaced seven minutes after the Sociedad goal as the home side dominated the final minutes of the first leg and came the closest to winning it on the night. United offered little attacking threat after the equaliser with some supporters upset the Argentine winger had been replaced.
Why Manchester United substituted Alejandro Garnacho
Alejandro Garnacho was the most enterprising of Manchester United's attackers against Real Sociedad but failed to deliver in the big moments that came his way. He had five shots in total during the match and squandered two good opportunities to score in the second-half but did produce the assist for Joshua Zirkzee's goal.
The 20-year-old cut a frustrated figure as he was replaced with the scores level and after the game United great Paul Scholes questioned the attitude of the forward. "He looks like he is sulking a little bit to me," Scholes told TNT Sports after the draw.
Garnacho might be needed from the start when United host Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend and Ruben Amorim explained why he took the youngster off against Sociedad. "I felt he was tired," he told reporters. "You see it because we did a lot of transitions in second half, he was late to defend. I felt he was tired to recover and do the same things."
