Pittsburgh Steelers hosting defensive tackle-fullback hybrid for pre-draft visit

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hosting Ole Miss defensive tackle and fullback J.J. Pegues on a pre-draft visit, according to multiple reports. Pegues had seven offensive touchdowns a year ago and was a key short-yardage player for the Rebels.

Pegues, on the defensive side of the ball, has played anywhere from nose tackle to out on the edge. In the NFL, he likely settles in as a nose tackle and out to a three-technique, but that is the type of player the Steelers could use right now.

Pegues started his college career at Auburn, and when he came onto campus in 2020, he was a tight end, not a defensive tackle. Once he converted, however, Pegues took off as a serious player following his transfer to Ole Miss.

Over his college career, Pegues had 10 sacks, but 29 tackles for loss. His run defense might be his biggest selling point to a team like the Steelers. At the NFL Combine, Pegues came in at 6-foot-2, 308 pounds and put up average numbers across the board.
