The Cleveland Cavaliers became the first team in the league to clinch a spot in the 2025 NBA Playoffs when they beat the Miami Heat by five points on Wednesday. That win marked Cleveland’s 12th consecutive victory, and the Cavaliers are on the longest active winning streak in the league.
The Cavaliers have been running roughshod over their competition all season. Cleveland’s 52-10 record ranks tops in the NBA, and the team is on track to achieve a franchise record for most wins in a single campaign.
Amid the Cavaliers’ dominant season, the team has made an interesting business decision. The organization reportedly filed a trademark for “CAVALANCHE” on Wednesday.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have filed a trademark for:
"CAVALANCHE"
The filing, made yesterday with the USPTO, came on the same day that the team clinched a playoff birth. #Cavalanche#Cavs pic.twitter.com/96CKTqIb5Q

It’s unclear if the timing of the filing (the same day Cleveland clinched a playoff spot) was a coincidence. The term, often used when the Cavs go on a huge run, sums up just how effective the the squad has been on the offensive end of the floor in the 2024-25 campaign. Cleveland might just be the best offensive team in the league at this juncture.
For one, the Cavaliers are averaging a league-high 123.1 points per game this season. They also rank second in the NBA in field-goal percentage and first in 3-point percentage.
Star guard Donovan Mitchell is Cleveland’s leading scorer, but the Cavs have received consistent scoring production from folks up and down the roster. A whopping six players on Cleveland’s current roster are averaging 10-plus points per game with the team.
Of course, to go on a run during a game, strong defense is also required, and the Cavs have plenty of that (as evidenced by their strong defensive rating).
Considering the timing of Cleveland’s trademark filing, folks maybe shouldn’t be surprised if “CAVALANCHE” is featured on merchandise related to the 2025 NBA Playoffs.
The Cavaliers hope to keep the good times rolling and win their 13th game consecutively when they play the Charlotte Hornets on Friday. Friday’s matchup stands out as one that the Cavaliers should win, so long as they don’t play down to their competition. The Hornets have won just 14 games all season and are losers of their last eight contests.
