Bills Urged To Sign ‘Physical’ Receiver In Free Agency

The Buffalo Bills need receiver help this offseason, and many see this as the reason the franchise couldn't surpass the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs.

With Khalil Shakir putting pen to paper on a new deal, he looms as Josh Allen's No. 1 guy heading into 2025, along with Curtis Samuel and Keon Coleman.

Amari Cooper and Mack Hollins are free agents, and it isn't known if general manager Brandon Beane will want one or either to return, which could leave Buffalo a little short on firepower.

But there is a way in which Allen's weaponry could get a major boost, and it comes in the form of Seattle Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf, who has requested a trade.

A move for Metcalf might be considered a fantasy, given the salary he would command, plus the draft capital needed to secure the trade, but ESPN's Bill Barnwell thinks it should at least be a discussion for the Bills.

"One year after trading away Diggs, the guy who was supposed to be their No. 1 receiver, the Bills could restore that sort of player to their roster by trading for Metcalf," Barnwell writes. "Adding him would give Buffalo a physicality it doesn't have in its receiving corps, a role it tried to fill by trading a third-round pick for Amari Cooper at midseason. After the Shakir extension, I'd be surprised if the Bills made a move for a wide receiver who will make as much as Metcalf will on his next contract. But stranger things have happened."

Yes, stranger things have happened, and while there are reports that Metcalf is looking for a contract worth around $30 million APY, could he soften his stance on that in search of a Super Bowl with Buffalo?

Given the state of the AFC East, the Bills could appeal to Metcalf, and having Allen throw him the ball would likely see his numbers skyrocket.

With James Cook (we think), Dalton Kincaid, Dawson Knox, Coleman, and Shakir as the other pass-catching options, Metcalf could feast.

Yes, it seems unlikely, but if the Bills are serious about breaking through that playoff ceiling, a big move for a player like DK would give them ample firepower to do it.
