Cherries aim at league double over Spurs: Team news and preview

Andoni Iraola’s AFC Bournemouth will be hoping to complete the league double over their hosts, after their 1-0 win at Dean Court in December.

Ange Postecoglou’s team have hit a small patch of form in the league recently after a difficult season so far, sealing three wins in a row before their defeat to Manchester City last time out in the league.

Bournemouth will continue to be without Illia Zabarnyi as he serves the final game of his three-match suspension for his red card vs Wolves.

But Julian Araujo will be available for selection after he was given the all-clear to return after he had surgery on his hamstring. He was not involved vs Wolves in the cup, but he is set to be back involved this weekend.

Another player who wasn’t in the squad for the cup was Ryan Christie, who has been managing a groin injury for much of the season but came off injured in the league against Brighton last week.

Iraola said it was going to be difficult for the Scot to be involved against Wolves, but he may be back and available for the trip to Spurs.

The Cherries continue to be without Enes Unal, Marcos Senesi and Adam Smith.

Spurs, meanwhile, have struggled with injuries, with Radu Dragusin and Dejan Kulusevski ruled out.

Former Cherry Dominic Solanke returned from injury off the bench against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, but he too was replaced with another injury.

**Head-to-Head**

While Bournemouth won the last meeting between the two sides, Spurs have the better record across the 16 games between the two.

Tottenham have won 10 to the Cherries’ four, with two draws.

Across the past six meetings, the Cherries have won two to Spurs’ three, with one finishing level.

Earlier this season, Spurs came to the Vitality Stadium and were beaten by Iraola’s side, Dean Huijsen’s 17th minute header from a corner the difference as the hosts won 1-0.

The Cherries made it to the FA Cup quarterfinals last weekend as they beat Wolves in a dramatic game, winning after a penalty shootout.

The game finished 1-1 after extra time, Evanilson’s opening goal cancelled out by a brilliant Matheus Cunha strike, before Bournemouth won 5-4 on the shootout.

That followed back-to-back defeats in the league, though, as the Cherries were beaten the weekend previous by Wolves after Zabarnyi’s red card on 31 minutes, Cunha’s goal the difference.

Then came a 2-1 defeat to Brighton in midweek, Joao Pedro scoring from the penalty spot before a brilliant Justin Kluivert strike drew the Cherries level, only for Danny Welbeck to seal the points for the Seagulls.

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 at the AFAS Stadion thanks to a Lucas Bergvall own goal, before the second leg of the tie next week.

The defeat in the league to City followed wins against Brentford, Manchester United and Ipswich Town, although they were also knocked out of both cups in February.

The Cherries head to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, March 9, kick off at 2pm.

The game will be broadcast on Sky Sports.
