Chelsea are back in action this weekend in the Premier League
Chelsea are back in Premier League action this weekend with a home clash against Leicester City. Their upcoming opponents have struggled to adapt to life in the top flight and are in the drop zone along with Ipswich Town and Southampton.
The Foxes are staring down the barrel of an immediate return to the Championship. They won the second tier title last year before losing manager Enzo Maresca to Stamford Bridge.
Maresca has done a steady job overall with the Blues but will want to see some more consistency from his young side. They are sat in 5th place in the table as they eye a place in the top four.
Chelsea injury latest regarding loaned out man
Chelsea gave Caleb Wiley the green light to join Watford on loan in the January transfer window. However, he is yet to make an appearance for the Championship play-off hopefuls due to injury.
In this latest update regarding his condition by the Hornets’ manager Tom Cleverley, he isn’t too far off returning. His boss has said: “Caleb will be learning what I want from the full-backs all the time. He looks a very promising player.
“He needs to learn some of the arts you will need in the Championship, and he will. He is a bright lad, and willing to learn. At the moment he is still learning, but he is someone who looks a useful player. He is now fit and available.”
Wiley, 20, was snapped up by Chelsea in July 2024 and he was handed a long-term contract until 2030. He hasn’t featured yet for the Blues and was shipped out to Strasbourg for the first-half of this term and played six matches for the Ligue 1 outfit under Liam Rosenior.
He rose up through the academy ranks at Atlanta United and broke into their first-team as a teenager. He made 83 outings for the MLS outfit and fired six goals before moving to England.
Chelsea’s last league outing
Chelsea beat Southampton 4-0 in their last league outing to boost their Champions League hopes. Speaking afterwards, Maresca said: “It was very important because we know from now on every game is important. We are happy to get three points, knowing that if we get three points then we will be up there [in the table] but if we don’t win then we will drop a little bit so it is about how we manage our emotions until the end.
“For sure, we were happy with the performance but we were happy at Villa because the performance was very good but we just didn’t win. But tonight we are very happy.”
He added: “I just said to the players that we are in our worst moment in terms of results but we are fourth and one point from third and that is us in our worst moment. So that means a lot and also shows how good we have been in the first part of the season and now it is just a matter of trying to finish in the best way.”
