Everton secure return of coach who left for Man City role

Peter Cavanagh has rejoined Everton as an U21s assistant coach - meaning he is now overseeing some of the youngsters he worked with before he left several years ago

A former foundation coach who left Everton for Manchester City has returned to the club. Peter Cavanagh spent more than six years at Finch Farm after a career playing in the Football League.

After moving down across to Manchester he worked as a first team coach for Plymouth Argyle then Stoke City but is now back on Merseyside to support the Blues’ Under-21s.

Cavanagh, who played for the likes of Accrington Stanley, Rochdale and Fleetwood Town, has been appointed to assist Paul Tait with the academy’s eldest group. It means he will be overseeing the development of several players who have spent time around the first team squad this season, including Roman Dixon, Martin Sherif and Isaac Heath.

Cavanagh shared his return on LinkedIn after his first game back involved with the club - the U21s’ win in the Liverpool County Football Association Senior Cup on Monday night.

Goals from George Morgan and Sherif secured a 2-1 win over Widnes at Walton Hall Park.

He wrote: “It’s been nearly two weeks since I came back to a place I know really well.

"Tonight was my first experience of a home game as part of the U21 coaching group. Z Cars and win to advance to the semi finals of the senior cup . It’s great seeing players I remember as young boys performing as young men.”

Cavanagh’s return is part of changes made following the promotion of Leighton Baines from U18s manager to first team coach under David Moyes.
