Liverpool have reportedly made enquiries about the striker who has a £58m release clause.
Arsenal’s season has been dominated by the narrative that they need to sign a striker, but they failed to do so both in the summer and January transfer windows.
The Gunners saw a bid reportedly rejected for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins in January, but apart from that, have not made a concrete approach for a striker. However, due to injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, they are expected to move for one in the summer.
Arsenal have been linked to several names including Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Wolves striker Matheus Cunha. They are now set to receive competition to sign one of these from league leaders Liverpool.
Liverpool make contact for Sesko
Liverpool look set to win the Premier League title this season, but one thing that isn’t certain is the future of striker Darwin Nunez, who has struggled for form this year under Arne Slot. With that in mind, the Reds are reportedly looking to sign a striker to replace him in the summer window, with new reports suggesting that they could battle Arsenal and Chelsea to sign Benjamin Sesko. According to the Boot Room, Liverpool have made enquiries about signing Sesko, who has a £58 million release clause attached to his contract.
The RB Leipzig striker has been a long-term target for Arsenal, and they remain the favourites to sign him, however, Chelsea are also interested and could move for the 21-year-old too. The report says that Sesko has previously hinted that he would like a move to London, but if Liverpool win the league and maybe even the Champions League, it could tempt the 21-year-old to move to Merseyside instead.
Sesko has made 34 appearances in all competitions for the German side this season, scoring 17 goals and five assists. He plays as a target-man striker, something that Arsenal have been crying out for this season and beyond. Regardless of where he goes, it does look increasingly likely that we will see Sesko playing in the Premier League next season.
Arsenal could sign a cheaper Sesko alternative
Seeing as Sesko is commanding interest from rivals, it could be more difficult for Arsenal to sign the 21-year-old this summer. So they could decide to pursue a different option in the form of Lille FC striker Jonathan David, who they have been linked to in recent weeks.
David has been one of the most prolific goal scorers in Europe this season, netting 21 goals in all competitions, including eight goals in 13 Champions League matches. He is due to leave Lille in summer as his contract will expire. No doubt, David could be one of the bargains of the century, seeing as the demand for top strikers is so high. Arsenal could sign him for free in the summer, a big saving compared to a £58m move for Sesko.
