Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI delivering a keynote speech

On March 7, Ms. ERI Arfiya, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the “Pre-TICAD Summit on Infectious Diseases and UHC in Africa”, and delivered a keynote speech.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI introduced that Japan has taken the lead of international discussions on infectious diseases and Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and has also worked to develop human resources and improve facilities in African countries in order to contribute to development of global health architecture.

In addition, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI introduced that the Government of Japan, in collaboration with the World Bank and WHO, is making efforts towards the establishment of the UHC Knowledge Hub, with the aim of, among others, developing human resources for finance and health authorities. Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI further mentioned that the Government of Japan is currently working with TICAD co-organizers on how to make TICAD 9, which will be held in Yokohama this August, an international platform for leaders to discuss solutions to socio-economic issues, including health, while listening to the voices of those involved in Africa and Japan. Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI reiterated Japan’s intention to work closely with various partners to co-create innovative solutions to these issues.

The “Pre-TICAD Summit on Infectious Diseases and UHC in Africa” is a meeting organized by “Malaria No More Japan” and “Malaria No More US”, where the government sector, international organizations, and other relevant parties, as well as academics discussed what solutions might be possible regarding the various issues that impact the realization of UHC in Africa.
