Manchester City could make a surprise bid for an Aston Villa star this summer.
Pep Guardiola has reportedly requested for Manchester City’s scouts to keep a close eye on Jacob Ramsey as the Cityzens consider a potential swoop for the Aston Villa midfielder.
It may not statistically be Ramsey’s best season to date as he’s only scored three goals and assisted four in 31 matches but the versatile playmaker’s overall game has significantly improved. Unai Emery has worked wonders to get Ramsey playing at a consistent level following two disrupted years due to fitness woes and injuries, guiding him to becoming a key player in Villa’s structure.

The arrival of Marcus Rashford has upset Ramsey’s rhythm somewhat but the competition should end up being healthy in moving Villa’s academy product closer to his full potential. The 23-year-old, who often plays on the left flank but inverts inside as a number 10, has formed a superb partnership with fellow Englishman Morgan Rogers.
Ramsey’s performances have been so impressive this term that new England manager Thomas Tuchel is understood to be keeping tabs before picking his first Three Lions squad. There’s plenty of competition for places - especially in attacking midfield - but Ramsey is under consideration.
Man City eye Jacob Ramsey
Unfortunately for Villa, it’s not just the international setup watching Ramsey closely as Premier League rivals Man City reportedly hold a significant transfer interest. TBR Football claims Man City have been following Ramsey’s progress closely with permission from Guardiola and are “hugely impressed” by what they’ve seen so far.
The report suggests City are weighing up making an approach for Ramsey in an upcoming transfer window but face competition from other Premier League clubs. It’s claimed Chelsea looked at Ramsey last summer whereas Arsenal are said to hold a long-standing interest in the wide midfielder.

Villa, who would earn pure profit in PSR terms if they were to sell Ramsey due to the fact he’s an academy product, are reportedly holding out for in excess of £50 million. That was the case when Newcastle United reportedly made an enquiry in January 2024 and it remains so now.
Ramsey happy at Villa
Despite growing interest from elsewhere, BirminghamWorld understands Ramsey is very content at Villa and isn’t currently interested in a move away. The 16-time England under-21 international is happy with his current game time and enjoys working under Emery, who he believes is key to improving his game.
As it stands, a transfer to City is unlikely but that’s not to say Ramsey’s head couldn’t be turned in the future. The potential destinations on offer - including the Etihad Stadium certainly don’t lack appeal, it’s just Ramsey is in a great head space at the moment and doesn’t want to be impacted by any outside noise.
The summer transfer window doesn’t open until June 12 anyway and there’s an important season to finish before any business can get underway. With Villa four points outside the top four in the Premier League, preparing for a quarter-final of the FA Cup and now into the latter stages of the Champions League, the thought of a transfer couldn’t be less of a priority right now.
