Paul Scholes agrees with Ruben Amorim as he makes damning Man Utd statement

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes says success in the Europa League is all Manchester United have "got left" after enduring the "worst league season".

United currently sit 14th in the Premier League and manager Ruben Amorim admitted in January that his side are perhaps the "worst" in the club's history. Their only chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season is by winning the Europa League and their last-16 tie against Real Sociedad is finely poised.

The tie is 1-1 after the first leg thanks to goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mikel Oyarzabal, meaning United will need to beat Sociedad at Old Trafford next week to book their place in the quarter-finals.

"It has been the worst league season for Manchester United," Scholes told TNT Sports ahead of the game. "They're out of the FA and League Cup. This is all they've got left to get back into Europe next year."

Despite United's struggles this season, Scholes believes that Amorim deserves to be given time to turn things around. "I don't think there is much pressure on him yet," Scholes insisted. "I think he is alright, he is going to get plenty of time now.

"He needs to change this club around, he has not really signed a player yet other than [Patrick] Dorgu who I think has been alright when he comes in, but there are a lot of areas of the team he needs to improve.

"I think they need to give him three or four windows and it is going to take a lot of time to get this club right and back to where it should be going. I think they have to [stick with him] now, where else do they go?

"He is a really young and bright manager, I think he speaks well and he did a magnificent job at Sporting Lisbon, as we all know. There is so much going on for him in the background which can't be helpful and it can’t be helpful to the team so that must have some kind of affect on them.

"Let's give him time, get behind him and hopefully he will build a team that will take us forward." United will be back in action on Sunday when they host rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford, before welcoming Sociedad for the second leg next Thursday.
