Former Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood has been reunited with an ex-coach from his Old Trafford days after snubbing England. The 23-year-old's off-field issues led to his departure from the Red Devils last summer, but since joining Ligue 1 outfit Marseille, he's been in scintillating form, scoring 16 goals in 26 appearances.
This resurgence has sparked talk of an England recall. However, Greenwood, who has one England cap, was overlooked by former boss Gareth Southgate. With Southgate's exit post-Euro 2024 and Thomas Tuchel at the helm, FA chief Mark Bullingham has clarified that Greenwood is not in the frame for an England return. "That's happened formally, so he wouldn't be able to (play for England) because you can only switch once," Bullingham stated.
"We actually didn't have that communication. I know people asked Gareth about him, and Gareth was upfront in that he hadn't been in his thinking, because he hadn't been performing at that level, so I'm not aware of any communication we had with him.
"I don't think there was ever a request or anything like that. It just wasn't one we got to, so it's a personal decision by him."
Greenwood has reportedly asked to switch his international allegiance, with Jamaica believed to be the country he wishes to represent.
The Caribbean nation is currently managed by former United assistant manager Steve McClaren, who worked briefly with Greenwood at Old Trafford in 2022 before leaving Erik ten Hag's backroom staff.
Since his move, McClaren has enjoyed a promising start, winning three of his first eight games and suffering only two defeats, both against the USA.
