'He is irresistible': Arsenal legend Robert Pires names Liverpool player as one of his absolute favourites

Liverpool have had some of the best attacking players in world football grace their team over the past decade or so.

The Reds became one of the best sides in Europe led by a forward line to match any throughout football history.

However, while it couldn’t have happened without Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino, the star of the show was always Mohamed Salah.

Since arriving at Liverpool in 2017, Salah has been one of the most consistent goal-scorers on the planet.

This season, the 32-year-old has reached new levels at Anfield, with some placing him as favourite to win the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

And according to legendary Arsenal winger Robert Pires, Salah is still one of the very best wingers around.

Robert Pires hails Mohmed Salah wing-play

As a decorated former winger himself, Pires certainly knows what it takes to make it as a top-quality wide man.

The Frenchman won the 1998 World Cup and also lifted two Premier League titles with Arsenal, one of them with the iconic Invincibles team of 2003/04.

So, when asked by The Athletic to name his favourite current wingers, it should mean something that Pires chose Salah.

“This season Mo Salah has progressed a huge amount in terms of always being in the right position,” says the 51-year-old.

“With the experience that he has, he senses things. He’s always well positioned. And he’s very good at anticipating defensive mistakes.

“He’s never surprised when the ball comes to him — he’s always ready. As we say here in France, he is irresistible!”

Pires explains what makes Salah so good

As well as picking out Salah as one of his favourites to watch, Pires went on to explain exactly what makes the Egyptian King so effective as a wide player.

“He’s always drawn towards goal, yes. But do you know why? Look at his first touch against Brentford here,” he says, pulling up a clip from earlier in the season.

“Look where the ball goes. Tac. Because if the ball stays too close to his feet and the defender comes in, he’s dead. But here, he controls the ball and his foot sends the ball towards goal.

“Here, against Newcastle, Salah takes one touch to lay the ball off and, when he sees the ball is going out to the wing, he moves immediately towards goal. He’s capable of playing as a winger and then, depending on where his team-mates and the ball are, he puts himself in front of goal. That’s why he’s so good. He’s good on the wing and he’s good as a No 9.”

Liverpool fans don’t need Pires to tell them just how good Salah is, but it’s nice to hear one of the best of his day break down exactly what makes Mo such a special talent.
