Cody Gakpo was not able to play any part against PSG after he picked up a knock during training in the week, with Slot providing an update ahead of this weekend’s action.
Liverpool welcome Southampton to Anfield this weekend in a Premier League fixture that pits Arne Slot’s title-chasing Reds against Russell Martin’s relegation-threatened Saints.
The Reds hold commanding 13 points clear at the summit with their title aspirations growing stronger each week, while Ivan Jurić’s Southampton appears increasingly destined for an immediate return to the Championship after a disastrous campaign that has yielded just nine points from 27 matches.
But for Gakpo, who had been enjoying a productive spell in Arne Slot’s rotation, was ruled out after sustaining a knock during training in the days preceding the high-profile European clash.
Now, speaking in his pre-Southampton press conference, Slot revealed that he still can’t put a definitive return date on Gakpo:
“He didn’t train yesterday yet, let’s see if he can today. Again, it’s a close call but it’s not a long-term injury.”
“He still had a lot of pain yesterday so he was not able to train. Let’s see where he is today… I can’t give you the answer yet.”
Meanwhile, the Saints were able to welcome four players back this week that missed their last fixture against Chelsea.
