After a roller coaster of a few months, the goalkeeping position at FC Barcelona is now gaining some stability as the Polish veteran Wojciech Szczesny is now the clear starter for Hansi Flick.
The Pole played one of his worst games in a Blaugrana shirt when the Catalans visited Lisbon back in January, with the UEFA Champions League League Phase game between the two sides ending 4-5 in Barcelona’s favor.

The Polish veteran made up to 8 saves in that game, 5 of them from shots taken from inside the penalty area.

Szczesny has played 14 games for the Catalan club up to now, having won 12 and drawn 2. In the process, he has also kept 8 clean sheets.
Against Benfica in the first leg of the Round of 16 tie, his work started in the very first 17 seconds, as he masterfully dived and saved a shot from close range from Akturkoglu.
His next test came with the free-kick that Kokcu took from the edge of the area that was awarded after Pau Cubarsi’s foul that resulted in his expulsion. The goalkeeper was successful in this event as well.
He also saved another header from Akturkoglu from very close range, and in the second half, he prevented the ball from going past him twice more.
In addition to his saves, the Barcelona goalkeeper also showed improvements in his game with the ball at his feet, and continues to show his improving chemistry and confidence while playing with his teammates.
