CBS Sports links Panthers as possible landing spot for big name free agent

The Carolina Panthers enter the 2025 offseason with a clear objective to improve their defense. After finishing the 2024 season with one of the league's worst units, changes are necessary if the Panthers hope to make a splash this year.

One major area of concern is the pass rush, where Carolina tallied only 32 sacks last season, tied for the third-fewest in the NFL. CBS Sports' John Breech has suggested that the Panthers could be a potential landing spot for recently released edge rusher Joey Bosa.

Bosa, a five-time Pro Bowler and the 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year, was released by the Los Angeles Chargers in a cost-cutting move that freed up $25.3 million in cap space. Despite battling injuries that caused him to miss 23 games since 2022, Bosa remains a formidable presence on the field when healthy. He played 14 games in 2024 and recorded five sacks, demonstrating that he still has something to offer.

For the Panthers, Bosa could be a perfect fit and pairing him with Jadeveon Clowney would instantly boost a pass rush that lacked punch last season. While he may not be the double-digit sack guarantee he once was, his ability to pressure quarterbacks and his experience could be invaluable to a young and struggling defense.

At 29 years old, he still has a few prime years left, and his addition could provide both immediate impact and medium-term stability to the edge position. Financially, Bosa's market value may not be as high as in previous years, which could allow the Panthers to sign him on a team-friendly deal.

They could structure the contract with an early out, giving Carolina flexibility if injuries continue to plague Bosa. However, if he can stay on the field and produce, Bosa could become one of the best value signings of the offseason.

Adding Bosa would be a strategic move for the Panthers, providing much-needed depth without a huge long-term financial commitment. If Bosa regains his form and avoids injuries, he could play a critical role in helping Carolina climb out of the defensive basement and compete this year.
