Giants won’t take QB at No. 3 in draft, NFL execs predict: Here’s what they’ll do

With the bluster from New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen that he’d take a “big swing” this offseason for a quarterback, some executives around the league don’t believe that will come in the NFL draft with a top prospect.

According to The Athletic’s Mike Sando, who polled five executives about the top 10 picks, none of them expect the Giants to take a quarterback, partially because the top two, Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, will be off the board already. Sando pointed out that in the 2024 version of this story, NFL executives called the first three choices correctly.

One ballot has the Giants taking edge rusher Abdul Carter from Penn State, while other officials believe the Giants will take wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter from Colorado.

“You can never have enough rushers,” the exec projecting Carter to the Giants said. “Ask Philly.”

In that scenario, which some doubted, the Giants would have big investments into edge rushers; Kavon Thibodeaux was taken No. 5 in 2022 and the Giants traded for Brian Burns last offseason.

Wrote Sando: Some execs thought Hunter would be the choice here. All the execs thought the Giants might be best off selecting an offensive lineman, but there were doubts regarding whether any of the tackle prospects merited selection this early, with Carter and Hunter still available.

Many reports suggest that the Giants will be bold in trying to trade up to acquire the No. 1 overall pick from the Tennessee Titans, who will take Ward, according to The Athletic’s survey.

But if the Giants can’t swing one of their top QB targets in the draft? Schoen better have a strongHere’s veteran fallback option. He already missed on his first choice, Matthew Stafford, who decided to stay with the Los Angeles Rams.

Carter racked up 12 sacks and 24 tackles for loss in 16 regular-season games last season. He was also named an All-American for the first time.
