Jamie Carragher says Ruben Amorim is 'drowning in tidal waves of mediocrity' at Man Utd

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Ruben Amorim is “drowning” after slamming the ‘worst Manchester United team’ of his lifetime.

The Red Devils have been in truly woeful form since the Portuguese coach replaced Erik ten Hag. United have won just 11 out of the 25 games he has overseen in all competitions - their latest outing producing a 1-1 draw with Spanish side Real Sociedad.

Should they fail to win the second-leg, that would see their season all-but over having been knocked out of both domestic cups, while they are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League.

And while Carragher has slammed United’s flops for their form, he claims that the club are well within their rights to have expected more from Amorim. Writing in a column for The Telegraph, the ex- Liverpool star said: “This is the worst United team of my lifetime and the bare minimum that could have been expected after Amorim took charge, that the team would look like they are being coached better than they were under Ten Hag, has not materialised.

“It is no shock United were beaten by Fulham in the FA Cup last weekend. United are deficient in every area of the pitch, 14th in the Premier League and looking over their shoulder at Everton and West Ham rather than outperforming anyone above them.

He added: “United’s players have not responded well to his methods. Has a single player looked any better than they were under Ten Hag? In fairness, most of the United players have surrendered any right to express disapproval about any manager given how poor they have been for so long.”

“United should be heading into next season amid a buzz of excitement about what their new coach might do after a pre-season of physical and tactical conditioning. Instead, there will be trepidation and fear of another slog of a campaign.”

And while Carragher has torn into the work that Amorim has done so far at Old Trafford as he struggles to deal with the demands at the club, he does not believe that it is the time to relieve him of his duties quite yet.

“This is not an endorsement of United immediately reviewing Amorim’s position before the start of next season. Far from it. United made the decision to bring him in mid-season despite the coach’s reservations as he would have preferred a pre-season and the chance to bring at least two or three new recruits with him,” Carragher said.

“But Ratcliffe and United’s fans are entitled to have expected so much more. It is sink or swim at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and Amorim is currently drowning in the tidal waves of mediocrity.”
