Ranking Eagles free-agent defensive end options if Myles Garrett isn't acquired

Each spring and summer brings its varying personality, but it will be hard to top last March and April. The Philadelphia Eagles retooled a roster that disappointed down the stretch of one of the worst collapses in NFL history.

We still remember where we were when Saquon Barkley's acquisition was announced. We remember what we were thinking. 'Philly paid big money for a running back'?

The most uncharacteristic of Howie Roseman moves proved one of the best in franchise history. Philly gambled on a few other guys. Most of those gambles paid off.

Zack Baun and Mekhi Becton will forever be remembered as two of the most significant. We're still waiting on Bryce Huff's acquisition to pay off, but we haven't given up on him yet. Sometimes, things take a while

And, though the new league year doesn't begin until March 12 at 4 p.m. EST, it appears we're headed for another exciting offseason. What an amazing couple of months this is shaping up to be!

The Myles Garrett rumor mill continues to churn.

Stop us if you have heard this before. Another star in the NFL wants out of his current deal and city. The Eagles have been mentioned as one of the most likely destinations.

Typically, smoke hasn't led us to any fires in these situations, but this is Myles Garrett. How do we ignore this? This one also carries some intriguing components.

Andre Berry is the Cleveland Browns' general manager and executive vice president of football operations. He previously served as Philly's vice president of football operations.

If there was interest in moving Garrett (which he claims there isn't), he and Howie's relationship could precipitate conversation.

Garrett has mentioned he isn't opposed to joining the Birds. As days go on, NFL insiders continue to connect the dots between them.

This would be an expensive acquisition, however. Garrett represents a $19.7 million cap hit in 2025 and another $20.3 million hit in 2026 per Spotrac, and it stands to reason, he'll want an extension once he arrives in town.

That clouds things some. Philly will soon make decisions about extensions they need to iron out. Three of the more significant names are Cam Jurgens, Jalen Carter, and Nolan Smith.

As talented as Garrett is, he isn't the only option the Birds have if they want to add reinforcements to their pass rush this offseason. The NFL Draft is an option if a decision is made to find talent there. We recently released a mock draft and sent Donovan Ezeiruaku (Boston College Eagles) to Philly at the 32nd overall selection.

If they don't want to wait that long, the free-agency signing period features other options who may tickle Howie Roseman's fancy.

Edge rushers the Eagles should consider who are not named Myles Garrett

Brandon Graham is expected to retire, but he remains noncommittal. Bryce Huff hasn't taken off yet.

Josh Sweat is expected to leave town during free agency, and if Garrett isn't acquired by way of a trade, Philly could use free agency to find help at EDGE. We'd advise against pursuing Khalil Mack. We'd rather not see Philly overpay for a 34-year-old.

1. Dayo Odeyingbo

Here's one of the more durable young men at an position. He notched 50 QB pressures last season, and if Philly is looking for a bargain, he may provide the best mix of balancing production and cost.

2. Chase Young

So much was expected of Chase Young that some have begun to undervalue him. Only five players notched more pressures last season.

Trey Hendrickson, Danielle Hunter, Myles Garrett, Jared Verse, and Micah Parsons are the guys who landed ahead of him. Add him to a pass rush that already includes Jalen Carter, Moro Ojomo, Jalyx Hunt, and Nolan Smith among others, and the Birds could go hunting for several more seasons.

3. Malcolm Koonce

Malcolm Koonce has been forgotten about to some degree after suffering a season-ending knee injury during a September practice session. That could lower the price tag some.

His breakout came in 2023, and any interested team will hit the jackpot by investing in his services.

4. Azeez Ojulari

Azeez Ojulari never earned a full-time role with the rival New York Giants. You all know what we're thinking, right?

Philly's acquisition of Saquon Barkley embarrassed Big Blue all season, and we can promise you this. If Philly added this former second-rounder, history will repeat itself.

5. Joseph Ossai

Joseph Ossai is a former All-Big 12 nod (2020) who we forgot about while playing on a bad Cincinnati Bengals defense. A change of scenery would work wonders for this young man though. Three seasons and 47 regular-season games and three starts produced 9.5 sacks, 73 tackles, three pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
